Sunday, March 10, 2024 at 5:01am New Moon Purva Bhadrapada 26°05 sidereal Aquarius: Purification and Transformation
The New Moon will be in Purva Bhadrapada, a degree of sidereal Aquarius meaning “the former one with lucky feet.” Its symbol is the front legs of the funeral cot, letting us know this is a lunar cycle is connected to endings: the conscious and empowering ones, the ones that are hard to do but we must embrace. The funeral pyre energy tells us we must let go of what is complete, that renewal, rebirth and purification can only come when we face the ending with courage and the ability to release and let go.
Governed by Saturn and Jupiter, the planets of authority and wisdom, Purva Bhadrapada is a powerful Vedic sign dedicated to walking a higher path, whose shakti or power is called yajamana udyamana: the power to spiritually elevate oneself through purification and devotional practice. Being ruled by the planets connected to the third eye and crown chakra, this sign seeks knowledge and wisdom, and understands that the spiritual path requires leaning into difficulty and discomfort in order to grow.
Coming in on the heels of Maha Shivaratri and two weeks in advance of the first eclipse of the year, this is a powerful New Moon that can help initiate major transformation. As this New Moon is sitting with Venus and Saturn, we are asked to look at who we love, what we love, what we are doing with our precious time, in our relationships and in our craft, to consider what is worth our time and energy and what we need to let go of. Purva Bhadrapada can be tough if we are not up for change, which means embracing endings. Rather than avoid this completion and transformation of energy and potential for clearing at hand, this New Moon encourages us walk through the fire and burn up the things that no longer serve us or others.
Questions to ponder. Since we are working with the Sun, Moon, Venus and Saturn (Jupiter as nakshatra lord), think relationships, business, personal habits, spiritual path:
🔥What feels complete and is up for change?
🔥What practices are calling you?
🔥What specific things can you do to support yourself through this lunar cycle?
🔥Cleansing, decluttering, Vedic tapas practices (like fire ceremonies, boosting agni, sauna…)
🔥Note that Mars will be moving very soon after the New Moon to sit with this cluster of planets, giving us more courage and energy to engage with the things that look hard and scary. Remember when Mars sits with Saturn, there can be a one foot on the gas (Mars) one foot on the break (Saturn) energy which can bring about frustration. Having a solid plan is key to engagement. Saturn has been very prominent in the sky lately, encouraging us to get our ducks in a row. Rahu has also been an indirect influence as it’s been one of the governing planets of where Saturn is sitting, reminding us to play every now and then as this unstructured time is helpful for creativity and discovery.
