Frequently Asked Questions

Namaste
Where did you study? How long have you been doing this?

I have been studying astrology on my own since I was about 12 or 13 when in 1985 or so, I found an old and severely tattered astrology book – there was no cover, the binding was held together with masking tape, and the first chunk of corners were missing – and I instantly knew it held keys for me. From that moment on, I pretty much only read astrology books (Western astrology at that time), and drew up charts for most everyone I knew. I came to a point at around age 24 when I felt the deeper questions of “Why this karma? Why this chart?” weren’t being answered for me by Western astrology. Serendipitously at that same time, a friend of a friend told me he had to leave dinner early to go get his Vedic Astrology reading. I immediately contacted the astrologer and he told me in my first reading – without my mentioning my love of astrology – that he would teach me. I have been studying Jyotish since about 1999 and have been doing readings professionally since about 2005. I formally studied with Jade Luna Sol (aka Chandra Jade Shankar), with Ronnie Gale Dreyer in NYC, and with beloved Jyotishi Betheyla in Albuquerque, NM before she passed away in December 2007. I have also taken Jyotish courses with Dr. Vasant Lad at the Ayurvedic Institute, and with Mahadev Levine in Rio Rancho. I have taught many weekend workshops to students and the community of the Ayurvedic Institute, student-taught with Betheyla, and gave free monthly forecasts for a number of years at Annapurna Ayurvedic Chai House in Nob Hill, Albuquerque. In terms of my University background, I received my undergraduate degree from New York University from the Gallatin School of Individualized Study where I majored in Philosophy, and have minors in Psychology and Photography. After a life-changing trip to India in February 2005, I decided that September to leave my wonderful life in NYC to go to the desert of NM to study Ayurveda with Dr. Vasant Lad at the Ayurvedic Institute. In June 2006, I graduated from APS 1 (Ayurvedic Studies Program), received my Yoga Teacher Training that same year, and then went on to audit ASP 2 in 2008 after taking time in 2007 to study closely with Betheyla. My time at the Ayurvedic Institute helped me to completely focus my energy on doing my dharma: Vedic Astrology readings and incorporating Ayurveda and Yoga into the readings. The three are considered to be sister sciences and the classic texts state that it is important for a student of one to be a student of the others.

What is Jyotish? Why are readings helpful? What are they used for?

Jyotisha (or Jyotish) is also known as Vedic Astrology, Hindu Astrology or Eastern Astrology as it is from India. It is a vast, ancient and wise system and is a sister science to Ayurveda and Yoga. As Ayurveda is used for the Body and Yoga for the Soul, Jyotish is used for the Mind. Getting a Jyotish reading can help a person to understand and thus align better with his/her gifts and talents, karma and personal four life motivations (dharma, artha, kama and moksha), and the timing of life events as well as the reasons for them. With its wonderful predictive techniques, Jyotish readings can help us to understand what planetary energy we are connecting with, how best to steer this energy, and when it will begin and end. This is important so we can fully engage in the opportunities life is presenting us and choose wisely. Jyotish can help us to live life with a deeper understanding of the “whys” of our lives, of the gifts we have and how to more fully express them, and of the karma we have, how to work with it and hopefully release from it.

Are you psychic?

Vedic Astrology has rules to be followed and planets to be honored, and answers to questions are based upon the chart, not my own opinions or feelings about a situation. However, a reading will almost always include some empathic or intuitive guidance that comes through either before or during the reading. I tend to hear, see and feel things in my body, which turn out to be incredibly significant for the individual receiving the reading. A few examples: I have frequently heard songs which are important to the individual (and not something I just heard on the radio), seen images of rooms or places and have been able to give specific details, and have also felt pains or twinges in my body around organs needing attention for the client. These intuitive or empathic hits are always supported by the chart, with the exception of the songs which the client recognizes the significance immediately. The more one enters into a sacred space such as Jyotish, the more the intuition builds. Jyotishis (Vedic Astrologers) understand that leaving the space for spirit to guide is critical to all readings.

What are the differences between Vedic Astrology and Western Astrology?

The short answer is… well there isn’t one but here goes. Both systems are valid systems and can offer profound guidance – it depends upon your karma with the system and which one resonates more strongly for you. In Jyotish, all of the degrees of your Western planets will go back roughly 23 degrees due to the Precession of the Equinoxes. This will many times change a person’s sun sign from say Aries to Pisces. Some people don’t like to hear this as we can be attached to our signs, whereas some people will say “Ah! That makes sense!” Jyotish is a lunar-based system whereas Western is a solar-based system. In addition to the 12 zodiacal signs, Jyotish has an additional 27 lunar signs called “Nakshatras” translated as “Lunar Mansion”, as it is based upon the Moon’s 28 day cycle. (There is an additional 28th sign that is used only in electional or mundane astrology, and not for personal readings). These 27 Nakshatras are truly the heart and soul of Jyotish. They bring amazing depth and understanding to a reading, bringing with them different deities, motivations (dharma, artha, kama, moksha), Ayurvedic doshic inclinations (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), animals (people tend to look like their predominant animal – a mouse, a monkey, a hare…), additional planets they connect with, remedies to mitigate planetary ills… the list goes on and on. The Nakshatras also are responsible for the “dasha” system, a predictive tool used to figure out appropriate timing for life events, which is unique to Jyotish. Vedic Astrology also has a number of divisional charts all based on the birth chart which add depth of understanding to various areas of life (like health, marriage, children, finances, vehicles, siblings, happiness…).

What kinds of situations are readings helpful?

In addition to getting a personal reading (which can highlight your gifts, talents and tricky spots, and help you to understand your purpose), you can get readings and therefore guidance for lingering or burning questions you have, to see compatibility with a partner and what areas will need extra focus and nurturing, and even for figuring out the appropriate timing of an event (such as a wedding or other ceremonies, getting medical procedures done, launching a business venture, timing for pregnancy, when it is best to move…). Whatever you need guidance with, a reading can definitely be of great use. For a full list of the different offerings, please see: http://www.lexneon.com/html/lnReadings.html.

How soon can I get a reading?

I am generally booked 2 weeks to a month in advance.

When do you do readings?

Monday through Friday: 10:15 am – 11:45 am EST If this time frame doesn’t work for you, I’m happy to figure out what will. Just let me know what date and time works best for your schedule and we will go from there.

How do I set up a reading?

Either call me at 505-795-5241 or email me at info@lexneon.com and we will go from there. Please note that it may take me a few days to reply but I will do so at my earliest opportunity. When replying with dates for your reading, please send along a few options since many times other clients are also looking at the same dates. This just saves us time going back and forth.

Where do I go for a reading? Do you do them over the phone?

I am currently only doing readings over the phone. I have unlimited long distance and will call you at the time of the reading. Please send along a number to call for the reading (land line preferred so you don’t have to use your mobile minutes for the call, unless you have Verizon in which case I can call from my cell). And don’t worry about an in-person reading being better than one over the phone. I have found there is really no difference, and clients will agree.

How often can I get a reading?

It depends on your needs. Some clients have yearly readings to see their “year in advance” chart. Other clients like to break it down to every 4 or 6 months for a reading, while others call when they feel it they need some guidance around an area presenting itself. It’s up to you.

What is involved in a reading?

Please see the Vedic Astrology Offerings page for descriptions of what readings are like. Also, please check out the testimonials section of my website for how others have experienced readings.

Do you record readings?

Yes, I record all readings as a digital file and will send you a private link to access the reading. Although the link will be accessible indefinitely, it is recommended to download the reading into your iTunes or other music program.

How do I download the reading?

Mac users: Right click (or control click with a laptop) on the link and this will give options. Choose “download linked file” and wait for the entire file to download which can take a few minutes. Copy it into iTunes and name it.

PC users: Right click on the link and save the file in to your hard drive.

*Please note that sometimes the internet server and browser used may not make downloading the file as easy as this. If this is the case, let me know and I can send you a cd of the file saved as an MP3. Audio files will be on 2 discs and need to be specified.

What if I need to cancel or postpone a reading?

As long as I have 24 hour notice, then we can reschedule or cancel without a problem. If you miss your reading or need to reschedule or cancel the day of, then you will be responsible for 50% of the reading cost.
